Kan Tong's own published ingredient list declares only plant ingredients, with soy sauce the one point to explain. The small amount of alcohol in naturally brewed soy sauce forms during fermentation — the same process that occurs in bread, ripe fruit, and vinegar. It is not khamr, the alcohol the Quran prohibits, such as wine, beer, or spirits made to intoxicate, and it cannot intoxicate in any quantity; the major Islamic legal councils have ruled that naturally occurring fermentation alcohol is not khamr and does not make food haram.
